Logistics data

Investigation of improvements to logistics energy consumption requires detailed information about freight movements and their reasons.

The Centre intends to investigate freight movements by collection of a wide range of logistics data from freight operators and other sources, including development of automated methods for exporting operational data from live logistics management systems. This enables large amounts of relevant data to be extracted, stored, analysed and used in logistics modelling studies.

Potential solutions are considered to be various strategies for reducing vehicle kms for a given freight task, including relaxation of time constraints, collaboration between fleet operators, consolidation of loads, and strategies for electrification of fleets.

The potential impact of widespread improvements of logistics efficiency is a reduction of 10%-15% of road freight energy consumption.
