Lecturer in Human Factors within Heriot Watt\u2019sSchool of the Built Environment (http:\/\/www.sbe.hw.ac.uk\/staff-directory\/guy-walker.htm<\/a>). Dr Walker\u2019s research iscross-School and cross-disciplinary in nature, and arises from a recognition that solutions to transportation problems have at their core a complex cultural and technological system that can no longer be approached by one academic specialism alone. What is required (and proposed) is a multi-disciplinary approach, one which extends engineering beyond the merely \u2018technical\u2019 to encompass the \u2018sociotechnical\u2019. Dr Walker\u2019s wide ranging background in the study of Human Factors, which includes over sixty peer reviewed articles and eight books, including a major text on Human Factors Methods, provides an excellent basis to proceed with the proposed research. In 2008 Guy was awarded the President\u2019s Medal from the Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors for the impact and practical application of new scientific knowledge. These attributes combine to enable a unique contribution to be made at the increasingly important interface of engineering and the human sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
